Holiday Listening
Sometimes the music you listen to at home in the cold and grey British skies just doesn't fit in with the vibe you want on holiday - so here are my suggestions. So you know where I'm coming from, at home I listen to Clash, Cornershop, Paul Weller, Neil Young, Outkast, Stills, Thrills, Stevie Wonder.... You can buy any of these albums by clicking the
Cover which will take you to Amazon.
If you have any ideas for a laid back holiday beat then let me know. clicking

| Cafe del Mar Vol 4
For me easily the best of the many Cafe del Mar compilations. Ultra mellow Spanish tinged beats. Sunshines Better by John Martin - his gravel voice sweetly rides along a deep base backing - the sun's going down and the ice is just cracking beneath the gin and tonic - this should be the soundtrack. Lots of Spanish guitar, breezy vocals and resounding bass. A must. |

O by Damien Rice
I hadn't heard anything by him till buying this album - ands it's difficult to describe - acoustic guitar, quiet to mega lod voice and some beautiful and powerful songs. Cannonbal, Blower's Daughter, Volcano are all great tracks. It doesn't do it justice to say acoustic rock, or to label it folk. Imagine Radionhead's Creep played acoustically but with more vocal power and a little more intricacy and you're almost there. My fave album of the year so far. |

You are the Quarry by Morrissey
His best solo work for years, hardly a track out of place. America is not the World is a cool and typically amusing start - and album just gets better. With a Morrissey album you know what you want to get - and often are disappointed - but not this time. Highly recommended. |

Flor de AMor by Omara Portuondo
First heard on Buena Vista Social Club this lady has an amazing voice - truly extraordinary. And the beat behind it is very relaxing. You'll think Cuba, dusty wooden dance floors and an elegant vamp crooning to an old style band. |

Sahara by Javier Ruibal
He comes from Puerto de Santa Maria, on the coast just south of Jerez and you can just imagine him with his guitar on the promenade watching the girls walking by, drinking chilled fino and smoking. Spanish guitar mixed with North African roots. A little like Sevillanas but not to annoying (! - sorry - it grates on me after a while). This is the sound of a bon viveur with agreat voice and great guitar hand. Click on the cover to go to sound samples - hear Reina de Africa. |

Live at the Lyceum - Bob Marley
I was always disappointed by Bob Marley albums - even by Survival - when all the time this is the one I should have bought. It catches the real joy and excitement of the night - and everything is so right - the vocals, backing voclas, rocking guitar, great bass, keyboard and drums. Includes the definitive version of No Woman No Cry - just listen to the crowd singing it before he even starts - it's joyful. So Lively Up Yourself - this is such a great album. |
